Brightlingsea, Essex
Brightlingsea has won 'best beach in Britain' type awards and the good news is that between October and April, we're allowed to take dogs onto the beach. Terrific news, all that space to run up and down and although going out of season means potential bad weather, you do get the advantage of a relatively empty beach. Hurrah. However, watch out for the tides... we drove all the way from London to let Laddie have a run only to the find the tide lashing up to the car park for the entire afternoon. I think the phrase is 'doh!'. But all was not lost as there's a great walk heading away from the array of beach huts following the coastline that seems to go as far as you'd like it to. I don't think we came across anyone along this path that didn't have a dog with them. You get a terrific view of the sea on one side and marshland on the other side making a great place to spot birds... we saw at least 2 kinds of waders without even trying.

Summary
A great beach if the tide's out, a great seaside walk if it isn't.

Notes
The car park is a little pricey for out of season patrons but the good news is you can park on the road for free out of season anyway. Follow the signs to the 'waterfront' and the car park is inbetween the tower and the skate ramps... you can't miss it.
