Cloughton Wyke, North Yorkshire
Cloughton Wyke Cloughton is a very pleasant little village. It's rocky cove is rumoured to have been a haven for smugglers in the dim and distant past. It's a smashing little village with a couple of pubs, a general store, a garage and a Post Office come shop (most obliging people well worth your custom). Just before you leave the village where the A171 veers left turn right down a small lane (not the road to Ravenscar)... at the very end of the lane you will find a small car park. Now for the walk suitable for young and old (watch the kids if you venture from the footpaths) which takes about 2 hours for the round trip, less if you are young. Take the left-hand path which takes you on to the top of the cliffs and simply follow your nose and take in some impressive scenery. About half a mile or so from Hayburn Wyke the path splits into two, take the lower path away from the Cleveland Way and the cliff tops, this will lead you to the Hayburn Wyke Inn, which is a distinctive stone building fronted by a red-tiled veranda, neat rows of picnic tables on a hardstanding and a supply of large toys to keep young visitors happy. At the side is a garden with trim lawns and plenty of water for our pets. Suitably refreshed make the return trip spotting all the scenery you missed on your way out.
