Dogside.com And The Light Up Lead
Dogside.com Lead Dogside.com is a new and extremely funky looking website, completely written in Flash (so make sure your browser is up to date) that offers a number of products (and indeed community) aimed at the "Urban British Dog". There's a message board, maps of city walks and oddles of media to keep you amused... to quote the website... "it's the destination for modern urban dog owners".

All this content however is padding to what is, essentially, an online shop focusing on three products... a dog coat (not pictured), a dog bowl and a light up lead. The coat and bowl we've not seen but they appear functional enough although you will of course be paying a premium for that cool look. Dogside.com Lead Lit Up

What we have had a play with, as you'll see from the photos is the light up lead. The first photo shows the lead itself, the second in "lit" mode". I'm sorry about the quality of the photos but it's a surprisingly difficult thing to snap... check out the Dogside website for some far better pictures. Now we live in a small village in North Wales surrounded by mountainous common land so we're not really the target urban audience the company is going for. This aside, we took the lead out for a test drive. What is it? Well it's a groovy looking and strong feeling lead, interwoven with a strong of blue lights, powered by 2xAA batteries (supplied) in the handle. You can turn the lights on to flash, or just turn them on, and boy does it look good. Is it for show? Well yes, I guess so, but there's also the road safety aspect as people and more importantly in an urban environment, cars, will definately see you coming... it's very very bright. But walking across our dusky mountain I did feel the lead was just as at home here as the urban jungle. My only critism of the design is the handle is a little weak and uncomfortable... I wouldn't want to hold onto a powerful dog with it. If safety is your main concern, I would suggest it's no replacement for a luminous jacket or simlar as the lead sort of "points" to the dog rather than highlight him (i.e. miss the lead, hit the dog). But it looks fantastic and you and your best friend will look as funky as the night is dark.
