Pick up the canal towpath near Leicester city centre (Castle Gardens).
You can walk for 2-3 hours in either direction, taking in nature reserves, wetlands and the like, only having to cross one road on the Watermead side.
Going West you will pass the National Space Centre and the Old pumping house, on your way to a larage nature reserve which is reclaimed quarry.
Going East you will get a good view of Leicester City's new football stadium and go into one of the last remaining wetlands in the area.

A canal towpath walk around Leicester.
The towpath can be accessed from the carpark at Abbey Park.
There are refreshments here.
In some areas you may have to pause for cyclists but once out of the narrow areas there are wide grassy spaces and rivers to play in.
Not ideal for dogs which chase waterfowl.
Swans ducks, moorhens, coots and geese abound, as well as heron and the occasional cormorant.
